Welcome to Hippo Web Solutions!
What’s this site all about?
Hippo Web Solutions is a blog dedicated to helping others develop their own blogs. It is filled with information, strategies and tactics that beginner to intermediate bloggers can use to accomplish some of the often frustrating tasks that you need to do to build the best site possible, keep everything running smoothly, and promote your site so it gets noticed.
Who is Rodney Smith?
I’ve been an IT professional since 1999, specializing in software development, a fascinatingly creative and at times maddeningly frustrating pursuit. So I guess it’s no surprise that I’ve ended up in blogging and web development then!
Like most bloggers and wannabe web entrepeneurs, I still have a day job, but I’m working towards the day when I’ll be able to rely solely on my online pursuits to make a living.
How I got involved in the web
In 2005 my wife, a freelance writer, started a website. At the time she asked me to be involved, but I was already heavily involved in another after-hours project and knew I wouldn’t have the time to do it justice. Credit to her, she battled on regardless and started her first site using Microsoft Frontpage and some free webspace from her ISP. In early 2007 I took over development and admin of the site (still not quite sure how that happened!), and as I’d earlier suspected, became obsessed (but in a good way).
At that time the site was still all hand-coded in Frontpage, which was, I’m sorry to say, quite awful to work with. After looking at a whole bunch of other HTML editors, some better, some worse, one day I stumbled across WordPress and was immediately impressed with how easy it made the job. Now I use it as the basis for all the sites I develop.
There’s a lot to learn
Even so, there’s a lot to learn if you want to do things properly. Through this blog I hope to demystify the whole process of blogging with WordPress; I hope you find it useful!
